Third Sunday of Easter, May 4th, Ps. 33 (34)
"I will bless the Lord at all times.  His praise always on my lips."   This psalm was chanted regularly at the Eucharist for centuries because it touches on so many of the themes of the liturgy.  See especially verse 9.

Monday of the Third Week, May 5th, Ps. 41 (42)
"Like the deer that yearns for running streams,..."   Maybe we're praying this psalm with a great longing for God (not just his gifts, but a longing for God himself) in our lives.  Maybe we're feeling the lack of that passionate love, and we're asking God in the words of this psalm to reignite this love that longs for him.  Either way, we touch God's heart when we pray this psalm from our hearts.  Read the Pslam with Fr. Tuesday of the Third Week, May 6th, Ps. 42 (43)
"Defend me, O God, and plead my cause against a godless nation."   This is an appropriate companion to Ps. 41 (42).  The psalmist begins by focusing on the sinfulness around him.  But eventually gets around to regreting his own fallen-ness, and looks to God for his reviving, renewing love.

Wednesday of the Third Week, May 7th, Ps. 70 (71)
"In you, O Lord, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame."  This is sometimes called the "Prayer In Old Age".  I'll be 70 on my next birthday, and am recognizing myself and my needs more and more truly in the psalm.  But maybe we ourselves don't count ourselves among the older crowd.  Then we can pray this psalm for and with our elderly family members, friends, neighbors.

Thursday of the Third Week, May 8th, Ps. 66 (67)
"O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shed its light on us."   St. Benedict wanted his monks to pray this psalm of praise and gratitude often at the very beginning of the day, and the Church has continued this practice in the Liturgy of the Hours.  the psalm begins with a celebration of God's stewardship of the whole world.  But, in the end, it focuses on God's gracious goodness to us in giving us a good harvest from our gardens.

Friday of the Third Week, May 9th, Ps. 65 (66)
"Cry out with joy to God, all the earth!  O sing to the glory of his name!"   From verses 1 through 12, the psalm is a collective call to the whole people, the whole nation, to praise God for his great goodness.  But from verse 13 on, this is a very personal expression of gratitude and praise to God for his help in a time of great need.

Saturday of the Third Week, May 10th, Ps. 26 (27)
"The Lord is my light and my help.  Whom shall I fear?"   This psalm concludes with a call to "wait for the Lord" or to "hope in the Lord".  This "waiting" is not a standing lazily around wondering when God will turn up.  It's a knowledge that our God is close, and a trust that with him we're in good hands; the best hands.  This "hoping" isn't some vague desire ('I hope I win the lottery.').  It's a well-grounded trust in one who has proved himself to by eminently trustworthy.
